Afinké Machine & Babylon Saints at Blue Lounge Friday, August 26, Wichita, Kansas

LA Based Reggae-Rock Band Babylon Saints joins forces with Wichita Steelband Afinké Machine

Former Wichita resident Joseph Peck returns to Kansas with his Los Angeles based reggae-rock band Babylon Saints for a reunion show at Blue Lounge in Wichita with steelband Afinké Machine on Friday, August 26. The Saints then head West to Garden City for Saturday and Sunday performances at the 20th annual Tumbleweed Festival on August 27 & 28.

Peck is a graduate of Wichita State University with a degree in Music Education K-12, an accredited artist with Wichita based Arts Partners, and was a former faculty member from Wichita State University where he taught World Music and directed the WSU Steelpan Orchestra. He and former WSU students Troy Olson, Mark Lewis, Matt Maholland and Chris Herriage formed Afinké Machine in 1998. In 2002 Joseph moved to Los Angeles with the vision of placing the steelpan instrument into popular music. Since then, he has performed and recorded with such artists as Cyndi Lauper, Scott Weiland, Ryan Gosling, and American Idol artist Didi Benami to name a few. Currently Peck lives in Malibu, CA with his wife. The two are expecting their first child this year.

The steelpan is made from 55-gallon oil drums and was originally conceived on the Island of Trinidad, West Indies in the late 1930’s. Steelpans, also referred to as steel drums, are one of those instruments that affect the listener with a feeling of happiness and relaxation like no other. Wichita State became one of the very few Universities in the 1970’s with a steelband so when Peck and other Afinké Machine percussionists attended WSU to study music with Dr. JC Combs they had access to the only acoustical musical instrument invented in the 20th century and many opportunities to perform for local Wichitians.

Babylon Saints vocalist and guitarist Matt Gerovac grew up on the Island of St. Thomas and was accustomed to the steelpan sounds, so by the time he met Peck in Los Angeles they had this common musical bond. The two along with Babylon Saints bassist Tyler Drake performed in Wichita last summer as part of their summer tour and were greeted with a standing room only attentive audience. Wichita resident and drummer extraordinaire, Jeff Stidham will be joining the Saints, as well as Afinké Machine. Wichita native Beau Jarvis is playing keyboard with both bands.

The Blue Lounge is located at 608 East Douglas Avenue, Wichita, KS 67202. Show will start at 9pm (21 and older only), admission is $7. Tumbleweed Festival is all ages (Babylon Saints only)
